‘When Is The Best Age To Learn The Piano?’ is one of the most popular queries that I get asked when writing with reference to learning the piano or keyboards. It seems that this is a concern for a lot people around the age of 13 and over. There seems to be a widespread false impression that as soon as you get old then it is too late to learn the piano or keyboards.
This is not at altogether true and in fact it is more acceptable to say that the older you are the more probability you have of becoming successful at piano playing.
This can be a tremendously slow and frustrating process for a small child to learn the piano. They need regular scheduled practice sessions and it will be particularly testing for them to sustain interest. Initially it takes a very long time for children to learn the piano as in contrast to adults but over time the know how of piano playing would seem to get built-in to them and as soon as they begin to become capable it becomes very straightforward for them to advance further.
When the piano is taught to elder children in their adolescence then the progress might be less painful and enthusiasm might even be high. The advancement will not be extremely speedy as you need to interiorize the movement of the fingers and hands but at this age there is hardly any hurry to learn. The whole learning process becomes the joy in itself instead of learning as a way to attain perfection.
So to reply to the original question, am I too old to learn the piano? then the answer has to be a clear-cut “NO”. You can effectively learn how to play the piano or the keyboards at any age, in reality the older you are the more straightforward it will become and better your chances of accomplishment.
